The School’s History
Arendal has a long history of international trade and was once a famous harbour for Tall Ships. In 2023 Arendal will celebrate 300 years and has a long history of international business, related to shipping and maritime activities.
In 2006 Arendal International School (AIS) was the first English-medium primary and middle school in Norway funded by the local authorities. As from August 2012 AIS is a state-funded private school, which offers an English language educational programme for students from age 6 to 16.
The school opened in August 2006 with 20 students ranging from 6-13 years, and has been developing rapidly ever since. AIS is an official IB World School offering the Primary and Middle Years programmes.
The school started in an old church, but moved to the UN-house at the Arendal waterfront after three months. Three years later the school had outgrown its facilities in the United Nations house and moved to Hisøy.
The school is based in the premises of the former His school at Fagerheim and can enjoy more space both inside and outside; football field, basketball area and sand volley ball pitch. As from January 2014 AIS is its own landlord after having purchased the premises from the municipality.
